For nearly a year, MB92 La Ciotat has been collaborating with Carbon Blue, a local company specializing in plastic upcycling. Carbon Blue transforms waste plastic into furniture, sculptures, and other household items. “The purpose of our collaboration,” explains Dorian Testa, Carbon Blue Technical Director, “is to take the plastic waste generated on MB92 projects, such as plastic tarpaulin used to protect yachts from sun, severe weather, and sea salt, and repurpose it as raw material for various products. Since the beginning of this partnership, Carbon Blue and MB92 have successfully processed nearly 2.2 tons of plastic waste.”
When CF Barceloneta approached Marc Hervás, MB92 Group Sustainability Manager, for support from MB92 Barcelona to revitalize some of the club’s infrastructure, it presented the perfect opportunity to bring both entities together. Carlos Arena, a board member of the Barceloneta Football Club, explains, “This initiative emerged after numerous conversations with Marc, where we sought the best way to support the club. Understanding the club’s needs, Marc proposed the idea, which seemed ideal. It covered the essential needs of the club and was a fantastic project to be part of.”
For Marc, the project also served as a practical test for the material. “The processing of the planks to create the furniture involves new technology, so we were eager to see it put to the test in an environment where it would be used extensively, to assess its properties and limits for potential other applications.”
The initial order request was for seven benches utilizing 115kg of plastic, which were delivered in June this year. According to Carlos, the feedback has been positive. “Initially, the idea was to use the benches for the field. However, seeing how good they look, we decided to use them for the changing rooms, despite this requiring a larger quantity.”
This project exemplifies the possibilities and potential of community collaboration, both locally and across the company. It showcases the benefits of the MB92 Group’s international synergies through this first cross-shipyard community project. For Dorian, this cements the base of a strong first year working together. “We see this as the start of a long and fruitful relationship with MB92.”
The neighbourhoods of La Ciotat and Barceloneta are fundamental parts of who we are. With our deep connection to the sea and many of our team members having strong local roots, we are committed to supporting these vibrant and passionate communities. Carlos adds, “For us, as a neighbourhood entity and district football club, having a good relationship and being able to collaborate on projects with all the nearby companies and organizations means a lot. We are sure this helps bring everyone closer together and contributes to creating a better neighbourhood for all.”
So, what is next for this project? The first phase has been completed, and the next step is to continue producing new materials for the club and to keep testing the scope to see where else it could add value. For CF Barceloneta, we hope these benches provide the perfect platform for a great season ahead. Força Barceloneta!
